Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone Language Learning is a Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) software program created by Rosetta Stone, Inc.  The patented software incorporates images, text and sound to teach grammar using “spaced repetition” without translation, a learning method that works well in vocabulary acquisition tasks, especially when related to learning a second language. Rosetta Stone refers to its teaching method as Dynamic Immersion™ – a term that has been trademarked by the company.

The Rosetta Stone language instruction method is 100% online-based and requires no translation or memorization.   Rosetta Stone gives you the opportunity to easily read, listen and speak in your chosen language; stay motivated with a range of activities and exercises; and refine your conversational skills using built-in speech recognition software. The speech-recognition technology helps you pronounce syllables, words and sentences in your new language while providing immediate, ongoing feedback. Retain what you’ve learned with Rosetta’s built-in Adaptive Recall™ feature that provides review exercises designed to help you transfer what you’ve learned into your long-term memory.

Basic Rosetta Stone exercises focus on a combination of reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.   The program also includes a voice recognition feature that allows you to practice speaking and receive proper pronunciation feedback.  Your lessons are tracked using a comprehensive learner progress tool that assists you in strengthening your language skills. You can choose which units and exercises you want to study, or you can just let the software take you on a guided tour through the entire course.

Learner Commitment:

When you enroll in a Rosetta Stone language course, you are agreeing to make use of the program by showing consistent activity. If the system shows no activity in a 30-day period, you will be ‘deactivated’ and your license will be offered to the next person on the class waiting list. A dedicated and serious learner who studies their chosen language at least thirty minutes a day should be able to complete the program in six months.

How Rosetta Stone Works:

The Rosetta Stone language program uses colorful images and native speakers’ voices.  The method is called “Dynamic Immersion.” The idea is to teach you the target language through trial and error –  the same way you learned your first language as a child. The learning system requires no translation, no grammar lessons and no drills. Lessons are taught completely in the target language, and you receive immediate feedback whether your answer is right or wrong.

Rosetta Stone language training is used by the US Military, NASA, Fortune 500 companies, libraries and over 10,000 language schools all over the world. Rosetta Stone provides a real-life language experience that is the closest thing to being immersed in a foreign culture –  but at a fraction of the cost!
