Homeschooling in Virginia

virginiaAs July 1, 2015, Virginia legal code Section 22.1-254 revised the state’s compulsory attendance regulations to read that “…instruction of children by their parents is an acceptable alternative form of education under the policy of the Commonwealth of Virginia.”  Based on this law, a home school “teaching parent” must show that he/she (1) holds a high school diploma; or (2) is a qualified teacher; or (3) provides a curriculum for their child that is “delivered through a correspondence course or distance learning program” or other in some other manner; or (4) can provide substantiated evidence that he/she is able to provide “an adequate education for the child.”  The State of Virginia does not classify home-based instruction as private, denominational or parochial education.
