Homeschooling in Texas

texasBased on the results of a 1985 class action lawsuit filed in Texas, homeschools can legally operate as private schools.   The court in the case also stated that homeschools “must be conducted in a bona fide manner, using a written curriculum consisting of reading, spelling, grammar, math and a course in good citizenship; no other requirements apply.”  As a result of this ruling, home school parents in Texas do not have to register with or contact a school district before placing their child in a home school; are not required to allow the school district to visit their school/home; are not required to have a teaching certification; and are not required to have their chosen curriculum be district-approved.
