Homeschooling in Tennessee

Tennessee-300x180Legal code for the State of Tennessee defines a home school as “a school conducted by parent(s) or legal guardian(s) for their own children.”  Tennessee home schools can be either church-sponsored schools or non-church schools.  However, Tennessee does not recognize attendance at a church-based schools as homeschooling because the education offered is not the same as education conducted by the child’s parent or guardian. A parent in Tennessee can withdraw their child from public school if they have “any good and substantial reason as determined by such parent or other person having legal custody of the child, and agreed to by the respective local board of education.”
