New York parents do not have to register their child in a public school if they intend to home school that child. However, home school parents must inform their District Superintendent via a Letter of Intent (LOI) stating that they intend to establish a home school. The LOI must be filed by July 1st or within 14 days of the home school’s start date. Homeschool parents in New York must also submit an Individualized Home Instruction (IHIP) plan to their local school district superintendent and must maintain attendance records for each child in their home school. New York home school teachers are not required to hold teaching credentials or post-secondary degrees.
