The Nebraska Department of Education refers to “home schools” as “exempt schools.” “Exempt schools” are considered to be non-approved or non-accredited schools. Parents/teachers in “exempt schools” must elect to not meet State approval or accreditation requirements. By receiving exempt status, Nebraska home school parents are electing not to have their child attend a school that meets state approval and accreditation requirements while still complying with state compulsory attendance laws. Nebraska has no formal education requirements or qualifications for home school instructors, but the Nebraska Department of Education does reserve the right to visit exempt/home schools to determine whether students are receiving appropriate and adequate instruction.
