Homeschooling in Montana

montanaMontana Code Section 20-5-109 states that “a parent has the authority to instruct his child, stepchild, or ward in a home school.”  The Section also defines a home school as “instruction by a parent of his child, stepchild, or ward in his residence.”  Montana home school parents hold complete responsibility for (1) the education philosophy of the school; (2) the selection of instructional materials; (3) the time, place and method of instruction; and (4) evaluation of the home school instruction.  Montana does not require either certification of home school teachers or the use of standardized testing in home schools.  Home school instruction must include an “organized course of study that includes instruction in the subjects required of public schools.”
