Homeschooling in Illinois

illinois-state-flagIllinois recognizes home schools as “non-public” schools rather than as private schools. No licensing is required for non-public schools and private school accreditation is “optional.”  However, non-public schools “may” register with the Illinois State Board of Education, but are not required to do so.  Teachers in Illinois state-recognized non-public schools are not required to be licensed or certified but, as of the 2011-2012 school year, all full-time teachers in non-public schools must hold “at least a bachelor’s degree.”  Illinois teachers in non-public schools that were hired before 2011 and are not certified and/or do not hold a bachelor’s degree, must attend professional development courses annually.
