Homeschooling in California

californiaCalifornia has no specific homeschooling laws.  However, in April 2015, the California Department of Education did address the issue and stated that “California statutes do not explicitly authorize home schooling.  Whether a home schooled child is attending a private school, and therefore is exempt from public school attendance, is a decision made by local school districts and law enforcement authorities.”  California parents have four legal options in terms of home schooling their children:  (1) open a home-based private school; (2) enroll the children in a private school that offers an Independent Study Program (ISP); (3) enroll the children in a public school Independent Study Program (ISP); or (4) hire a credentialed teacher or tutor to teach in the home school.
