Students in Social Studies 8 will explore the history of the United States up to the 19th century. Students will examine the development of America’s independence and the struggle within this divided nation during the Civil War. Students will also discover the progress made in our country in terms of expansion and social change. Students will learn about the following topics: Colonialism Imperialism Lifestyles of colonists Declaring independence from England U.S. expansion The Civil War and Reconstruction Social and national change in the 19th century After completing the course, students should be able to answer a variety of historical questions and demonstrate a number of social studies skills.
