Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns
Wednesday, May 7th, 2008Education Week published a review of Clayton M. Christensen’s book, Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns.
Trotter’s article and Christensen’s book provide hope that educational systems will find the ability to adapt to innovative delivery of educational services. As a proprietor of an online curriculum product, I am constantly amazed at the adaptability of some educational organizations, and the reluctance of so many others.
For example, our company, Global Student Network, provides virtual curriculum to public, private, and charter schools throughout the world. Currently, over 250 school districts are using this virtual curriculum to deliver education to students whose needs are greater than traditional classrooms provide. As I read the daily reports from a variety of education periodicals editorializing the challenges schools face, however, it is discouraging that more schools and districts are not actively seeking to incorporate some form of online learning into their model of education delivery.
Online courses have traditional been painted as an either-or option. Either the student sits in a traditional brick and mortar seat, or he sits at home under the parent’s tutelage. In many cases, these delivery options are appropriate. Global Student Network’s flexible collaboration allows schools to provide in those milieu’s, with added unlimited variety of intermediate hybrid delivery options as well. The online learning platform lends itself well to collaborative and inclusive educational delivery that includes student, teacher, parent, administrator, and others, such as tutors, counselors, etc.
Innovative education leaders throughout the nation have recognized for years that students do not fit into a cookie cutter mold, but have difficulty addressing individual learning needs. Companies like Global Student Network, with their innovative online delivery platform, provide schools the tools they need to individualize curriculum and delivery in models that best serve their students needs.
I highly recommend that all innovative educators read the article, and if possible the book.
