COURSE DESCRIPTION - GRADE 4

The fourth grade English student continues skill development in reading, spelling, grammar, and writing. Science concepts are integrated in the curriculum, as well as some basic math skills. Fluency and comprehension is increased as students read a variety of genres, journal, and engage in the writing process.

In fourth grade math, students investigate the base-ten number system, compute whole numbers, develop mental computation strategies. Students count money and make change, examine prime and composite numbers, and make simple measurement conversions. In geometry, students explore the properties of plane figures and solids. Students also learn statistical principals by exploring data, tables, charts and graphs, and learn how to make predictions based on interpretation.

Fourth grade social studies focus on statewide geography, history, government and economy. Students learn about issues and ways that citizens participate in their states government, and develop research skills.

Students in fourth grade science continue to conduct safe investigations. They choose appropriate tools, measure, collect, formulate conclusions and communicate findings. Students experiment and study physical and chemical changes in matter, property of materials, and reactions formed when combining two or more materials.
