COURSE DESCRIPTION - GRADE 2

The second grade is Global Student Network’s first grade level of Virtual Learning. Every course, every lesson is designed for the beginning computer user, as well as to meet their unique learning needs. The second grade curriculum integrates the use of commonly available library readers which enhance the students reading and comprehension abilities.

E-Learning at this level requires a high level of parent/mentor involvement in all subject areas. The learning modules support the student’s learning environment by providing a standards based curriculum complemented by video streaming, animation, and other interactive learning objects

In Language Arts, the student begins the development of reading, writing, spelling, research, and oral communication skills. Students use letter-sound correspondence knowledge and structural analysis to decode words. They begin to recognize by sight words that increase reading skills and comprehension. Daily journaling enhances the students writing skills, as they become increase familiarity with, and master a wide variety of familiar forms, moving from printing into cursive writing.

In Math, students increase skills in number sense, including number systems and operations. Students are introduced to estimations, classifications of shapes and geometric properties.

Second grade Social Studies focus’ on how people work together. Students learn about jobs today, and long ago in the U.S. and other parts of the world. The student becomes familiar with people whose work has significantly contributed to the world. In addition, students deepen their knowledge and understanding of people in other cultures, and begin to understand how global cooperation can help to achieve goals. Students begin to develop an understanding of U.S. government, and the citizen’s rights and responsibilities that go along with living in the U.S.

In Science, second grades explore the similarities’ and differences between people, animals, and plants. They begin to explore living systems and environments, especially habitats. Weather changes and patterns are observed, described, and measured. Students explore the cycles present in their everyday lives by investigation the Earth and sky, sound and light, and plants and animals.
